This study was designed to investigate “the Effects of Computerization on the development of secondary education in Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State”. The study was a survey descriptive research work. Instrument used for data collection was a structured questionnaire for a 4-point Likert scale, comprising of twenty (26) items. Four (4) Research questions and four (4) hypothesis were formulated for the study. The instruments used for data analysis were mean scores and chi-square statistic. However, simple random sampling technique was used to select two hundred (200) respondents used for the study. The result obtained from the study showed that level of computerization of secondary schools in Ezeagu L.G.A is very low as none of the schools has a computer laboratory, internet services and other ICT facilities except a few computer accessories scattered here and there used for office or administrative works. The schools do not have computer facilities for teaching and learning and consequently the effect of computerization is yet to be felt as they cannot enjoy what they do not have. It was also discovered that public school in the LGA are poorly funded, teachers and staff are never trained in computer use and computing skills. Teachers and staff are also poorly paid. These also affect their jobs. However, the researcher recommends that the assistance of the government and other stakeholders especially as regards proper funding of public school, donating teaching and learning facilities, instructional materials, training and retraining of teachers and staff of secondary schools, improving the welfare packages of teachers and other workers, among other things will help boost their work and enhance computerization of the schools so that they can start enjoying the benefits of computerization. This will increase the use of computer technology in the schools in addition to tackling all the problems affecting our educational sector.
In recent times, the world has witnessed a rapid increase in technological innovations. This era ushered in the advent of electronic computer system among other modern technologies. At present, the computer technology has permeated nearly all aspects of human organizational roles and education.
Computer encompasses almost all facets of human endeavors. So much has been achieved in the field, which include computer/information technology, engineering, entertainment, advertising, art, medicine, science and technology, agriculture, education and training etc.
Today, computer technology in schools is one of the most far-reaching and fast growing development in education. The incursion of the electronic computer system into the educational parlance, according to Sherman (2005) provides the wherewithal to solve the teaching and learning problems even more rapidly and accurately than hitherto to conceived. In schools, computers are widely used and has been found to be an effective device for presenting and instructional programme. According to McCormick (1993), computer can be used to diversify, develop and improve the pedagogical relation of teaching and learning.
Consequently, growth and development of any nation is specifically determined by the level of her exposure to computer technology. Obviously, computer technology has made some of the developmental factors of determinants of every individual or nation like commerce, culture, language, defense or security and many more to be more efficient and effective with no time wastage and with no physical or psychological stress. Therefore, computer technology has contributed so much in the development of education industry especially in the developing countries like Nigeria.
Computer as a technological instrument used for the development of every phenomenon- living and non-living, seeing and unseeing, hard or soft, etc. computer.
Statement of the Problem
It is now possible for the work or task which ordinarily would take hours, days or even longer to be done within minutes by means of computer technology. The computer is rapidly becoming available to many individuals in our society and there is no doubt that it is affecting the way we live, computers now play a vital role in almost every facet of our life. Computers are now a fundamental component of our jobs, schools, departmental states, and health care. Our banking systems and investments cannot function effectively without computers. Some of our medical and scientific facilities now depend entirely upon computer technology. In fact, every day it gets harder to find any time of business, educational institutions or government office that does not use computers and information technology in some way. There is probably no better indication of how advanced a society is than how computerization it is.
Today, computer technology in schools is one of the most far-reaching and fast growing development in education. Obviously, computer technology has made some of the development factors or determinants of every individual or nation life like commerce, culture, language, defence or security and many more to be more efficient and effective with no time wastage and with no physical or psychological stress. Therefore, computer technology has contributed so much in the development of education industry especially in the developing countries like Nigeria. However, most of the secondary schools especially in rural communities lack these computer facilities thus depriving them the benefit of this benevolent technology. Poor funding of public schools, corruption in the land, poor remuneration for teachers, lack of in-service and the on-the-job training for teachers staff and school administrators among other problems are the challenges that militate against the employment of these computer technology in schools.
Purpose of the Study
This study among other things will investigate:
- The level of computerization of secondary schools, in Ezeagu LGA.
- The level of uses of computer facilities in the administration of secondary schools in Ezeagu L.G.A.
- The level of uses of computer facilities in teaching and learning in secondary schools in Ezeagu L.G.A.
- The effect of computerization on the development of secondary schools in Ezeagu L.G.A.
Need for the study
This study is very important in the sense that it will open the eyes of stakeholders in education, administrators, school heads, proprietors and policy-makers in education, government officials, parents, teachers, students especially in Ezeagu L.G.A. of Enugu State to fully understand and appreciate the beauty and efficacy of computer technology on the development of secondary school education.
It is only a few years ago that we started hearing about computers, internet, e-mail, G.S.M etc, how we use them in various ways. Older technologies such as typewriters, landlines, post office, library, etc are being enhanced or replaced with new technologies made possible by computer technology. Hence, we can no longer ignore this new technological age (computer age) especially in education as it is a potentially powerful tool for extending educational opportunities both formal and non-formal to previously underserved constituencies – scattered and rural populations, groups traditionally excluded from education due to cultural or social reasons such as ethnic minorities, girls and women, persons with disabilities and the elderly, as well as all others who for reasons of cost or time constants are unable to enroll in schools.
Computer is today used in the administration of secondary schools, like in record keeping, taking inventory, school data base, supervision and inspection of schools, budgeting, auditing, evaluation of students and teachers, training of staff, paying of school fees and salaries, training of teachers and staff, etc. it is also used in teaching and learning like in Computer Assisted Instruction, computer managed instruction, computer based education, computer supported learning aids, electronics or online learning, among others. But as a result of government neglect of schools, computer, facilities are lacking in these schools, hence the level of computerization is low and as a result, the effect is negligence. This study hopes to unravel whether there is any effect that computerization has on the development of education in Ezeagu L.G.A. of Enugu State.
